~Sensei Gary Schmidt~

3rd Dan Gary Schmidt has been training with Master Mailman since 1998. Gary has the reputation of being the ‘work-out master’ here at U.M.A.A. His Wednesday night class is well attended with enthusiastic people who want to get in shape! If there’s one word we can all associate with Sensei Gary’s teaching style, it’s energetic!

Gary says that martial arts is his life and he feels honored to give back the knowledge and advice given to him by Master Mailman.

You can find Sensei Gary teaching here at the main studio in Grover Beach on Wednesdays. Sensei Gary also runs our Parks and Rec. program in SLO on Tuesdays and Thursdays!




~Sensei Kandi Serpa~



1st Dan Kandi Serpa is U.M.A.A’s newest Senior Instructor. Kandi’s background in working with disabled children is a real asset to U.M.A.A. Sensei Kandi believes that physical fitness and mental health go hand-in-hand.

Kandi states, “Self-esteem ultimately must come from inside of us...but if we put real effort into accomplishing something physical, it will carry over to our mental state!” Those of us who are experienced martial artists know this is true! The mother of two, Sensei Kandi’s mission is to provide family-oriented classes full of fun and enthusiasm! Catch her teaching here at the studio every Monday & Friday!
